A Little Something Awesome - The Supergirl TV Series Trailer

So far I'm loving the idea of this show. It looks like the show is taking the Buffy approach and using the idea of a superhero discovering her powers to analogously explore the idea of a person discovering who she is/her place in life. The writing in this trailer made me feel excited and even a little inspired. I just hope the show itself lives up to it, because I'm really looking forward to it now. Follow-Up Awesome - Gotham

So hey, guys, I'm back doing stuff, and just in time for the new TV viewing period! So rather than what I was going to post today, which I totally didn't irresponsibly not write down and then forget what it was or forget to work on it at all (probably), let's talk again about Gotham.

TV Reviews - Constantine Episode 0101: Non Est Asylum (SPOILERS)

As a DC Comics fan (and a comics fan in general), you might assume that I have at least a passing familiarity with all of the well-known DC characters, including the exorcist John Constantine, and you would be correct. However, my first exposure to Constantine was actually the old Keanu Reves movie of the same name which was...not too good. Don't get me wrong, it had some really twisted horror imagery, which is something that I just EAT UP, but its world-building was pretty cruddy, and it hardly answered any of the questions that it presented the audience with. That and Keanu isn't really the most expressive actor, so the character came off less "defeated man who presses on regardless" and more "I just don't give a crap". Since then my exposure to the character has been limited to a few random comics, so despite the fact that this character and his adventures seem right up my alley, I have very limited knowledge of said adventures or the world in which they take place, and I'm glad, because this show was great, and now I can experience this world and it's rules and characters as the show presents them.

TV Reviews - Gotham

And another fall season comes and brings with it more series premier reviews. however, there are fewer new shows this season that I am interested in. Maybe I'll do some season premiers eventually, but first, there is something that I need to do.

I am a fan of comic books and comic book stories, so you may be surprised that I didn't post this yesterday. After all, this is the show that everyone has been talking about. Batman is a big deal. The old Burton/Schumacher films still have fans today, and the Nolan movies were a wide commercial and critical success. Batman is more popular than he has ever been. I should have been looking forward to this movie that tells the very early origins of Batman by telling the story of the early rise of one of the caped crusader's closest allies, Jim Gordon, in the GCPD, but I wasn't. I was apprehensive. A Batman story without Batman? That's like a Superman story without Superman! However, where the other series that we all know that I am referencing still featured the character in their established role, this show will not feature Bruce Wayne as the hero. As I already said, this is Gordon's story, and what better way is there to tell the story of a cop these days than in the form of a cop drama?

 

Something Awesome #5 - Wonder Woman

As a comic book fan and a male human being, I am, of course, a huge fan of Wonder Woman. She's sexy, she kicks ass, and she's considered to be one of the greatest super heroes of all time. Since her creation in the '40's, she's been a symbol inspiring woman and girls everywhere, though perhaps not in the ways that Wonder Woman creator William Moulton Marston wanted (it's a long story, look him up). A member of the DC Comics "big three" alongside Batman and Superman, and equipped with the lasso of truth and a pair of indestructible bracelets, Princess Diana of the Amazons is truly worthy of the same treatment as other big heroes, especially with the upcoming Justice League movie. I'm not too sure if I like the way Wonder Woman has been cast in these new live action movies, but I choose to remain optimistic, especially now that it has been announced that she will get her own film!

Wonder Woman is an amazing character. With hundreds of solo comics, a long tenture as a founding member of the Justice League, and a great run in The New 52, you don't have to take my word for it. Pick up a Wonder Woman book or watch the animated Wonder Woman film from a few years back and see for yourself, and come back Monday for another Something Awesome.

TV Reviews - Beware the Batman

I loooove Batman. I love superheroes in general, but Batman is definitely one of my favorites. Naturally, whenever a new animated Batman series is announced, I toggle pretty rapidly between excitement and skepticism. Nothing, and I do mean nothing, will ever surpass Batman: The Animated Series as a TV Batman. Nothing. Ever. There have been other good TV Batman series. The old live action show with Adam West and Burt Ward was campy fun, and The Batman and Batman: The Brave and the Bold both had their good points and bad points, but Batman: The Animated Series is as close to perfection as we are ever going to get, and it spawned its Superman counterpart, Justice League, and Justice League: Unlimited all of which ranged from being better than average to being great. However, watching these old shows gets less exciting with time, and eventually a Batman fan just wants more Batman, and so now we have this new series, Beware the Batman, which, rightfully, has been garnering some pretty mixed reviews.

Movie Reviews (Sorta) - Man of Steel

So I've been wondering for a while, since basically the day that this movie came out, if I should bother reviewing it. I knew that this was the movie that everyone was waiting to analyze, and I genuinely wondered if I would have anything new to say about it. The result is this very late excuse for a review, which I'm going to make into more of a stream of consciousness about the movie. Maybe if I structure it a little less than most of my stuff, something profound will come out.

TV Review - Teen Titans Go!

I may be twenty-five and look twenty-one (and proud of it), but in many ways I'm still a kid at heart. I collect action figures, I play games, and I absolutely love cartoons, from Transformers, to the DC Comics Animated movies and TV series, to anime, to My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (yes, I'm a Brony, and a huge Lauren Faust fan), but there are few cartoons I've enjoyed more than the old Teen Titans series from a few years back. That show was amazing, from an utterly perfect voice cast, to great stories, to animation that could move fluidly between action scenes and comedic scenes, to an utterly brilliant mix of said comedy and action. It was pretty much perfect, taking queues from seemingly every great cartoon to come before it. When it was cancelled, I wept (inwardly, I am a man), and when I heard that it was being revived as a more comedic show, I was cautiously optimistic, but was my caution warranted? Yes, but not nearly so much as I would have thought.
